DSC00076LEWISTON, Maine — Bald Hill will bring its singular bluegrass-inflected American roots sound (or, if you like, American roots-inflected bluegrass sound) back to Guthries in Lewiston on Friday night, Feb. 13.

Formally known as She Doesn’t Like Guthries Restaurant & Café, this coziest and most comfortable of music venues is located at 115 Middle St., just over the bridge from Auburn. Imagine an oversized living room with better beer and sound. Doors are open from 10 a.m.; this is a restaurant & café, after all (we recommend the burrito du jour). Bald Hill will take the stage at 8 p.m.

It’s fitting the band will make its 2015 debut at Guthries. The New Gloucester-based 5-piece has played here several times before, but it did so with a slightly different name. “The Bald Hill Boys” had inferred a more bluegrass-intensive set list than has become the case, of late. Guthries, a venue known better by its own truncated moniker, is the perfect place for Bald Hill to roll out the newgrass brand.

Traditional bluegrass fans should not despair, however. Expect selections from Tim O’Brien, Gillian Welch, John Hartford, the Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe. Just understand that Bald Hill will complement these songs with tunes from Son Volt, Richard Thompson, the Band, Old Crow Medicine Show and Tom Petty.
